I.B.U. W.T.F.???

You may remember that a Friday Question some time ago asked for the I.B.U. of the Strongman Pale Ale ( http://www.prattstreetalehouse.com/2010/02/the-friday-question-25/). Well the analysis is in …. sort of!? I first got wind that all might not be right with the world when I received an e-mail from Jim at DuClaw asking if I’d had my results and if so, what were my I.B.U. values like? Amongst other samples, Jim had sent in their excellent double I.P.A., Serum and received an I.B.U. analysis more in keeping with an English Mild than an American I.P.A.! Hmmm. So, it was with great anticipation that I opened my results this morning and lo and behold …. Strongman Pale Ale …. 20 I.B.U. Seriously now, most of you reading this have probably got more I.B.U.s in your saliva so I’m afraid that this Friday Question must remain in limbo while I have a “conversation” with White Labs regarding their analytical techniques! It’s not much, but I take some comfort in the fact that the mean I.B.U. value for all beer samples analysed (and I believe there were some 5oo) is 17.4! Do I detect a headline in the making …. “American Brewers tire of the Hop War and start to brew low bitterness beers!” Watch this space and as soon as I receive a satisfactory explanation, I’ll let you know.

    20 I.B.U.’s?? Miller Lite is 10 for god sakes! Yes, there must be be a big problem here. Strongman likely needs some steroids…thats the problem! ;) Seriously, White Labs have any clue what they’re doing? Apparently not…

    I have had the strongman Pale Ale and it is more bitter than my homebrew’s that are 30-35 IBU’s. I’d say it’s around 40 IBU atleast or my Beersmith software is wrong. Oh yeah, the strongman is great!!
