The Fall Homebrew Competition
OK home brewers it’s that time again … time to flex your home brewing muscles and show us what you can do. We want a new seasonal ale to release during the prestigious events of Baltimore Beer Week and we want you to formulate the recipe and come and brew it with us (because we’re lazy like that!) There are no style guidelines or restrictions other than we’ve got to be able to commercially brew it (so give some consideration to the cost of special ingredients, for example, if you want to use 20lbs of organic jasmine flowers, chances are we’re not going to brew it no matter how damn good it tastes!). We’ll look to brew a 7bbl batch in early September with a view to releasing the brew at the BAM Oktoberfest in October. We’ll also have the brew at The Chesapeake Real Ale Festival (Oct 20th), on tap at The Pratt Street Ale House and a few of our favorite watering holes in the region and DC and some of our other beer week events. You, the brewer, also get to take a keg home of course. We’d like you to submit two bottles of your brew (clearly labelled with name/phone#/email) along with a recipe sheet (so we can figure out the costs) on or before MONDAY 6th AUGUST. Assistant brewer Derek and myself along with at least 2 of knowledgeable beer drinking pals will judge the entries as soon after that as possible. As I’ve already mentioned we’re not judging to bjcp standards so you can throw those crappy guidelines out of the window, we’ll be choosing the one that we like the best that we think will fit nicely with what we do. Previous winners have been “Dirty Hippie” American Brown Ale, “High Tea” best bitter brewed with English black tea and “Smoke Break” smoked chipotle porter. Our good friends at Maryland Home Brew (also on twitter @MDhomebrew) and the new DC homebrew shop at 3 Stars Brewing Co. (also on twitter @DCHomeBrewShop) will also serve as drop off points for your entries (and of course we’d highly recommend that you do your shopping there as well, they’ll have everything you need and if it’s not already on the shelf, I’m sure they can get it!) If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me email@example.com. If you want to stroll into somewhere like the Ale House, Max’s, ChurchKey or Meridian Pint and say, “hey, I brewed that!”, now’s your chance … get on it, good luck. Oh, if you really want to you can submit up to 3 different brews.
